How EquiNex Detects a Fall

EquiNex uses your phone's motion sensors to recognize the kinetic signature of a rider coming off a horse — the specific combination of impact and motion change that a fall produces — rather than waiting for you to lie still or listening for a wrist strike. Detection is patent-pending, tuned exclusively to horseback motion, and calibrates to each horse in your barn during your first rides together: a big warmblood's lope and a pony's jig set different baselines.

Because it reads motion patterns rather than a mount point on your body, it works with the phone in your pocket or in a saddlebag — on or off your body. And because it knows what riding looks like, normal riding doesn't fool it: jumping, galloping, and hard stops don't set it off.

What happens after a fall

  1. Seconds after impact: EquiNex detects the fall signature and begins spoken check-ins — "Are you OK?"
  2. Escalating alarm: if you don't respond, a loud alarm ramps up. On iPhone these are Apple Critical Alerts — they sound at full volume even if the phone is muted or in Do Not Disturb.

The Two Ways Everything Else Falls Short

1. Waiting for stillness. Most rider-safety features — including the safety tracking in popular riding apps — don't detect the fall at all. They alert someone after you've stopped moving for a set time, typically five minutes or more. In a real emergency, those are the minutes that matter most. And the reverse is worse: stop five minutes to give your horse a breather, open a gate, or chat with another rider, and the stillness timer fires a false alarm.
